    At Endeavour Academy, we believe that English is far more than a subject: it is a gateway to see the world as it was, as it is, and for students to find their place within the world as it will be. For many of our students, language, communication, reading, and self-expression have been disrupted by adverse experiences, barriers to learning, interrupted education, and other difficulties. Our English curriculum is therefore designed not only to develop academic success, but also to restore confidence, build integrity, strengthen communication, and empower our students to participate meaningfully in society. ​

    We believe that every student, regardless of starting point, deserves access to a rich, ambitious, and intellectually challenging English curriculum. Attendance at a specialist provision should never limit a child's entitlement to high-quality texts, powerful knowledge, or meaningful accreditation. Instead, our smaller setting, therapeutic approach, and deep understanding of our students allow us to remove barriers whilst maintaining high expectations. Through carefully sequenced learning, adaptive teaching, and strong relational practice, students are supported to become increasingly confident readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers. ​

    English at Endeavour provides students with opportunities to explore the full breadth of human experience through stories, poetry, drama, non-fiction, media, and spoken language. We believe literature offers both windows into the lives of others and mirrors through which students can better understand themselves. Through engaging with a diverse range of texts, students encounter themes such as identity, justice, resilience, conflict, relationships, morality, belonging, and power. In doing so, they develop empathy, cultural awareness, and the ability to critically engage with the modern world around them. ​

    Our English curriculum is rooted in the belief that language is power – 'a word after a word after a word is power' (Atwood). We explicitly teach vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, grammar, oracy, and writing through carefully structured and cumulative learning. We recognise that many of our students require repeated exposure, overlearning, modelling, and scaffolded practice in order to secure knowledge and develop confidence. Drawing upon evidence-informed approaches and cognitive science, we break complex knowledge and skills into manageable components whilst ensuring that students continue to experience challenge, success, and intellectual ambition. ​

    Reading sits at the heart of our English curriculum. We are committed to developing both the skill and the enjoyment of reading through high-quality shared texts, reading aloud, explicit reading instruction, disciplinary literacy approaches, and opportunities for independent reading. We recognise that reading can be difficult, frustrating, or unfamiliar for some students, and therefore place great emphasis on building positive reading identities, reading stamina, and reading confidence. Our curriculum exposes students to a broad range of literature, including canonical works, contemporary voices, diverse perspectives, and texts that reflect both the wider world and the lived experiences of our students. ​

    Alongside academic study, we place significant value on communication and oracy. Students are explicitly taught how to articulate their ideas, to listen respectfully, to debate thoughtfully, and to express themselves with increasing confidence and precision. For many of our learners, developing the ability to communicate effectively is transformational, and enables them to advocate for themselves and navigate the wider world successfully. ​

    Across all pathways from KS2 to Post-16, our English curriculum prepares students for adulthood, independence, employment, and further study. We balance functional literacy with rich literary study, ensuring students develop both the practical communication skills needed in everyday life, and the deeper cultural and critical understanding that allows them to participate fully in society. ​

    Ultimately, the English curriculum at Endeavour Academy aims to help students find their voice. We want our young people to leave us being able to read with understanding, to write with purpose, to speak with confidence, and to think with curiosity and compassion. Above all, we want them to recognise that their thoughts, experiences, and stories matter, and that through language they have the power to shape both their own futures and the world around them. ​
