Honesty, Empathy, Resilience

  • Design Technology

At Endeavour Academy, we believe that Design Technology is an important subject that enables students to become creative, independent, and confident problem-solvers who can engage meaningfully with the world around them. Through designing, making, and evaluating products, students develop practical skills, technical knowledge, creativity, and resilience. For many of our students, Design Technology provides valuable opportunities to experience success, develop confidence, engage in hands-on learning, and discover talents and interests that may support future aspirations.

We believe that every student, regardless of starting point or prior experience, deserves access to an ambitious, meaningful, and relevant Design Technology curriculum. Attendance at a specialist provision should never limit students' entitlement to practical learning, creative opportunities, or future pathways within education, employment, and society. Instead, our smaller settings and adaptive approaches allow us to personalise support, reduce barriers, and maintain high expectations for all learners.

Our Design Technology curriculum develops students' understanding of design, creativity, materials, manufacturing processes, problem-solving, and evaluation. Students explore a range of practical disciplines including resistant materials, graphics, textiles, and product design through carefully sequenced learning that builds knowledge, technical competence, and creative thinking over time. Students learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely and effectively whilst developing the skills required to design and manufacture products for a range of purposes and users.

We recognise that many of our students benefit from explicit instruction, visual modelling, practical demonstration, repetition, structured routines, and scaffolded opportunities to develop technical skills. Learning is carefully broken down into manageable steps whilst maintaining challenge and ambition, allowing students to experience success and build resilience. Through practical application and purposeful projects, students develop confidence in their ability to create, innovate, and solve problems independently.

Health and safety sit at the heart of our curriculum. We recognise that developing safe working practices is essential within practical environments and therefore place significant emphasis on teaching students how to assess risks, use tools and equipment safely, and take responsibility for their own actions. Students learn the importance of precision, organisation, responsibility, and attention to detail when designing and manufacturing products.

Our curriculum also develops students' creativity and problem-solving skills. Through design challenges, practical projects, and iterative design processes, students learn how to identify needs, generate ideas, test solutions, and evaluate outcomes. Students are encouraged to think critically, persevere through challenges, learn from mistakes, and refine their work in response to feedback kand evaluation.

Across all pathways from KS2 to Post-16, Design Technology at Endeavour prepares students for adulthood, employment, and further study. Students develop transferable skills including communication, teamwork, organisation, resilience, time management, critical thinking, and independence. We aim to ensure students leave school with the confidence and practical competence required to access future opportunities and participate successfully in an increasingly technological and design-driven world.

At Endeavour Academy, we understand that practical learning can be a powerful vehicle for engagement, confidence-building, and personal achievement. For many students, Design Technology provides meaningful opportunities to experience success through creating tangible outcomes, developing a sense of accomplishment, and seeing the direct impact of their ideas and efforts. Our curriculum embraces practical and creative learning as a means of empowerment and participation for all learners.

Ultimately, the Design Technology curriculum at Endeavour aims to develop confident, creative, and capable designers who are able to apply technical knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving strategies thoughtfully and effectively. We want our students to leave us with not only the ability to design and make products, but also the confidence, resilience, and creativity required to thrive in further education, employment, and adult life.
