At Endeavour Academy, we believe that Animal Care is a valuable and engaging subject that enables students to develop practical skills, responsibility, empathy and confidence whilst deepening their understanding of the needs and welfare of animals. Through hands-on experiences and meaningful interactions with animals, students learn to care for living creatures safely, responsibly and compassionately, whilst developing transferable skills that support independence and preparation for adulthood.
We believe that all students, regardless of their starting point, prior experiences or individual needs, deserve access to an ambitious and meaningful Animal Care curriculum. Attendance at a specialist provision should never limit a young person's opportunities to engage with vocational learning. Instead, our smaller class sizes, personalised support and strong relational practice allow students to experience success whilst developing practical skills, resilience and self-belief.
Our Animal Care curriculum option is designed to provide students with both knowledge and practical experience. Students learn about different types of small animals, their characteristics, body parts and welfare needs. They develop an understanding of how to recognise signs of good health, safely handle and observe animals, carry out basic health checks, and maintain high standards of hygiene and safety when working with animals.
As students progress through the curriculum, they develop increasingly complex practical skills including grooming animals, monitoring health and welfare, and communicating confidently with others about animal care. Through these experiences, students learn the importance of responsibility, patience, attention to detail and respect for living things. Opportunities to care for animals also support the development of emotional regulation, confidence, empathy and self-esteem, which are particularly important for many of our learners.
Learning is practical, structured and highly supportive. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, with visual supports, modelling, repetition and scaffolded practice used to ensure all students can access learning successfully. Students are encouraged to learn through doing, reflecting and applying their knowledge in real-life contexts, enabling them to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the wider world.
Animal Care contributes significantly to our wider curriculum vision of developing the whole child. Alongside vocational and practical skills, students develop communication, teamwork, independence and problem-solving skills that prepare them for future education, employment and adult life. Through caring for animals, students learn not only about animal welfare, but also about responsibility, compassion and the positive impact that nurturing relationships can have on wellbeing.
Ultimately, our aim is that students leave Endeavour Academy with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for animals responsibly, understand the importance of welfare and wellbeing, and recognise the value of empathy, patience and responsibility in both their personal and professional lives.
